Please join The Painting Center on Thursday October 4, 2007 for the opening reception for Elizabeth Yamin: Recent Work in the Main Gallery and Lieby Miedema: Works on Paper in the Project Room.
Elizabeth Yamin's recent work relates directly to her studio location in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Her paintings have been influenced by the dry docks, the cranes, the river, the tugs and barges that make up the shifting scene. The curve of a hull, the edge of a superstructure, the angle of a contrail give rise to complex compositions as well as direct linear statements. The development of the painting, its complications, overlays and entanglements, might be described as a dialogue between the specificity of vision and the abstract quality of perception. Yamin's paintings seek to maintain the tension between the multitudinous world of objects and their mental representations, while struggling to achieve a series of temporary resolutions.
In the Project Room Lieby Miedema 's works on paper draw from personal resources and allude to and evoke worlds outside, building on and exploring the painterly and imaginative themes introduced by Kandinsky, Miro and others. In the tradition of the Abstract Surrealist artists, Miedmea creates a raw primordial space filled with transparent and reflective elements interwoven with vivid color and line.
We hope to see you there! |
